SARAH – WEST HANTS
“If you want to get some fresh air and stretch your legs, then this is for you! This route is 80% flat, which is what we wanted. It is a slow paced walk with views stretching over the Jurassic Coast. Our guide was informative and I learned a lot about the history of Portland. There is a steep hill to climb as you finish, but there are plenty of stops on the way up.”

TYPE: GUIDED WALK
LENGTH: 5.2 KL
TIME: 3-4 HOURS (APPROX)
Join us as we take a tranquil walk and explore the disused coastal railway track on the East Side of Portland.
Now a famous walkway for many hikers it has gained national appeal for its stunning Jurassic Coast views and flat cliffside trail.
Starting at the natural cove of Church Ope, we head East walking the track to East Weare World War Rifle Range and finishing at the Grove.
Walking with a guide learn about the Jurassic Coast and Portland’s rich history in quarrying and its famous stone used for St Pauls Cathedral and Buckingham Palace to name a few!
The old line operated from the late nineteenth century until closing to passengers in the 1952 and goods in 1965. Its construction needed twelve years of blasting through solid rock and three extensions of Parliamentary time.
Today, parts of the line can still be walked and is considered one of the most scenic lines in the south west of England; it is now part of Dorset’s World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
We end with an ice cream and a “cuppa” at the top of Portland looking over the spectacular Chesil Beach.
THE LAST LEG OF THE WALK
The last part of this walk from the main track to the top of Island is steep with uneven ground and therefore not suitable for everyone. Sensible footwear should be worn and you should be in reasonable health to tackle this.
